Bill??...Bill Jensen???...I’m a fan!!
Ladies and gentlemen, there. he. is.
William the Conqueror. Okay, this is epic. He is also known as William I or William the *redacted swear word*, because his parents were unmarried. In probably around 1050, he wanted to be king of England (don’t we all) so he invaded with a fleet (wouldn’t we all) and killed an earl named Harold. Then he gave himself a Christmas present and got crowned on 25 December 1066!
Hence the title of Conqueror. He had a relatively unexciting life after that, although the Danes kept threatening to invade England but not really doing it. I can only imagine how that conversation went. “Vi skal dræbe jer!” “What, my fellow folk? Have you potatoes in your throats?” And then the Danes would surrender in two hours (World War II anyone?). Regardless, Will Conq. built a lot of castles, fortresses, and the lot. He was very protectionist and laid the groundwork for English nationalism that to some extent still survives today.
Not much else for today, but I leave to Finland in about three weeks, and then it’ll be off to London. Exciting times! See ya!
Sam
